The American Water Works Association estimates that the country’s water infrastructure needs are a whopping $1 trillion over the next three decades.
The infrastructure issue is increasingly key to safe drinking water: If safe water is put into old, lead or leaky pipes, it may not be safe when it comes out of the faucets in your home.
In Kentucky, the independent regulator, the PSC, does not have jurisdiction over water safety or environmental issues but does have responsibility for rates and infrastructure investments. Water quality standards for all service providers are enforced by the Drinking Water Branch of the Kentucky Division of Water.
